Rattlesnake Master, Eryngium yuccifolium Michx.
Button Eryngo also called Rattlesnake Master as is E. aquaticum
L. Family Apiaceae, fiber from this plant has been used
to make shoes by Native Americans for over 6000 years. Thirty five
pairs of shoes have been found in a Missouri cave dating from about 1100
AD to 6300 BC.
Native American Uses: Root used as an antidote for snakebite. In decoction for cough; toothache. Roots pounded and infused in cold water neuralgia and kidney and bladder problems. Root infusion considered blood purifier. Root infusion considered a panacea: promotes healthy constitution and spiritual healing. Root infusion consumed and applied externally for snake bite. Leaves dried or parched and used as astringent internally in infusion for diarrhea. |
