Pickeralweed (Pontedaria cordata L.) is common in the shallow areas of marshes, streams, ponds and lakes.  the leaf is best harvested in the spring as it emerges from the water.  At best this is a survival food. (More)

 

Medicine:  Micmac and Malecite used an infusion of the whole plant to prevent pregnancy.  Infusion was typically achieved by smashing the plant with a stone, placing it in a gourd or clay pot and then dropping a rock from the fire into the container.  Instant boil, try it. Montagnais thought the infusion a panacea for all ills.
