Mushroom Calendar 2010

Unless noted otherwise, these dates correlate
with "finds" from Edwardsburg, MI to Lake Michigan
latitude 42 degrees on an approximate straight line 
through Toledo, Cleveland and Chicago.
Expect first finds earlier to the south of this line, later 
to the north.

    April 20 throughout the season.

Wood Ears (Auricularia auricula) very black, rotted wood

    April 25 thru June 1  Mirrored dates of the morels.

Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) oak, alive, near base

    June 4 and continuing as of July 1

Oysters (Oysteria sp.) primarily on beech

    May 25 and continuing as of July 1

Coral (Clavicorona pyxidata, Ramariopsis kunsei) various dead wood, primarily oak

    June 1 and continuing

Chanterelles Cinnabar-red (Cantharellus cinnabarinus) hillock Painter marsh

    July 1  

Polypore black staining (Meripilus giganteus) around base of oaks, beech

    August

Jelly fungus

   June 1 and on

King Bolete (Boletus edulis) Found under pine duff and growing through it, along a mountain stream at 6000 feet.

Honey (Armillariella mellea) parasitic to oak, beech.

Found September 23 southern and northern Michigan (Ludington).

Puffballs (Calvatia gigantea and Lycoperdales sp. (longer season) under oak, in grass, mulch, here and there

Hen of the Woods, Maitake (Grifola fronosa syn. Polyporus frondosus)

Found on September 28 (Edwardsburg) beneath Oak.
