Medicine:  used to treat cardiac insufficiency and edema associated with cardiac insufficiency. Also, in Ayurvedic medicine the extract is used to treat worms, bronchitis, asthma, arthritis, rheumatism, skin problems. 

Cardiac glycosides in the drug has lead to its careful use for treating cardiac insufficiency.

Chemistry:  cardiac glycosides, toxic potentially fatal overdose possible.

Medicine: Roots are crushed, dried and cut.  Over-the-counter liquid extracts are available for home use to induce vomiting.

To treat poisoning by inducing vomiting.

Stimulates both gastric and bronchial systems (expectorant), febrifuge, also, used to treat dysentery.

Homeopathic uses include: Coughs, asthma, bronchitis, bleeding, gastrointestinal inflammations.
