Where Have All the Fish Gone

The coral reefs here are nearly devoid of fish.  They are grossly over harvested.  While snorkeling I swam into a long gill net, it was empty--a fisherman's futile attempt to catch the last fish.  There is ample room and ample water for aquaculture on this large island.  Wild fish cannot feed the Dominicans and their visiting tourists.  Something must be done to protect the fragile reefs and the vanishing wildlife.  Sustainable aquaculture may be a workable first approach.
