Red Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis L.  and Crimson Columbin, Aquilegia formosa Fisch. ex DC,  have been consumed as early spring greens boiled and eaten.  WARNING: The toxic alkaloids in the plant warn against this custom.

Columbine is the state flower of Colorado and is the name of the now infamous high school near Denver where numerous people were shot by two students on a revenge rampage.  The horrific events initiated much soul searching about the free access of guns in America.
