Cascara Sagrada, Frangula callifornica (Eschsch.) Grayand F. purshiana (DC) Cooper, Family: Rhamnaceae are small trees found typically on the West Coast and the Northwest United States.

The bark extract is a powerful laxative.   A couple of Naturapathic physician's once laced a salmon with the bark extract as a practical joke.  My experience was worse than any bout with the "Mexican quick step".

Prior to the Second World War you would find these tablets over-the-counter as a laxative instead of Ex Lax or the like.

Native American Uses: Bark infusion used as a purgative, laxative, as an anthelminthic tea.  Infusion of the twigs and fruit decoction used as an emetic.

Bark infusion considered a cleansing tonic.

Chronic, continuous use may be carcinogenic.
