Squawroot, or Broomrape, Conopholis americana, Southwestern variety, Mexican Squawroot, Conopholis alpina var, mexicana (Grayex S. Wats.) Haynes, was used in water infusion to treat debilitation caused by tuberculosis.

Jemez people used the dried plant as a good luck charm...Was used to bless the ground before a race.

This is a saprophytic plant (parasitic) living off decaying matter.  In the Midwest it is found in woods.  To about 6-8 inches high.
